Palm Beach Gardens’s LOCAL PALM BEACH GARDENS HISTORICAL FACTS

Incorporated in 1959 when industry titan John D. MacArthur purchased and made plans to develop 4,000 acres of land for the purpose of providing housing in an idyllic and “garden city” environment, Palm Beach Gardens experienced its first population and development in the early 1960’s. In 1970, MacArthur celebrated the city’s then population of 7,000 by purchasing and moving an 80-year-old Banyan tree from nearby Lake Park. An additional tree was purchased and moved the following year and still remains at the center of MacArthur Boulevard near Northlake Boulevard and featured on the city shield to this day.

While still short of MacArthur’s initial hopes for a community of 55,000 residents, today, Palm Beach Gardens enjoys a population of a little over 50,000 people and the city enjoys a reputation as a favorite spot to call home for both families and retirees alike.

No fewer than 12 golf courses are present within actual city limits and many have hosted a plethora of PGA championships and major events. Additionally, the number of courses and clubs outside the city and in the surrounding area increases exponentially when taking into consideration Palm Beach County’s reputation as one of the world’s premier golfing destinations.

As far as amenities and creature comforts, shopping and fine dining definitely do not take a back seat in Palm Beach Gardens. The luxurious 1.4 million sq. ft. Gardens Mall is a local institution containing over 165 upscale specialty shops as well as major fine retailers, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale's, Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s. Designers such as Gucci, Ralph Lauren and Lilly Pulitzer all have storefronts at the mall and numerous restaurants can be found within the mall itself with options from casual to formal. Additionally, the development boom has resulted in multiple new stripmalls with lovely outdoor cafes and charming boutique retail shops. Many restaurants feature dining on the waterways and are a favorite of locals.

The city is equally proud of its “Taste of the Gardens” Green Market located right behind the City Hall Municipal Complex on North Military Trail. Fresh and organic produce from local farmers are featured at the market along with a multitude of extraordinary baked goods, arts and crafts, musical performances and demonstrations. A local business expo is highlighted on the first Sunday of each month at the market so that other local businesses and artisans can benefit from the shared exposure and exciting environment.
