Loxahatchee’s HISTORICAL NOTES

In the early years of the previous century, the area that would later be known as Loxahatchee was largely agriculturally oriented with an emphasis on citrus crops. In 1917, the name “Loxahatchee” was utilized to refer to the greater area as a whole, including the natural preserves and refuges we know today. The small community then known as Loxahatchee Groves was recognized as a municipality by the state and kept the “Groves” designation in order to assist in differentiating itself from the surrounding area.

In 2006, Loxahatchee voted to incorporate with the stated desire to have more influence on locally impacting decision-making. Concerned residents are extremely desirous of maintaining the rural and unique charm that Loxahatchee enjoys and helps differentiate it from the rest of Palm Beach County in terms of lifestyle and privacy.

Situated near Wellington and Royal Palm Beach, the charming and eclectic community of Loxahatchee, or sometimes referred to as Loxahatchee Groves, retains a unique and rural feel while providing its residents some of the largest lot sizes to be found in Palm Beach County. A town that takes great pride in its agricultural roots, Loxahatchee is practically devoid of the chain restaurants and cookie cutter homes that have come to symbolize the negative aspects of overdevelopment in some areas. The community’s name is derived from the Seminole Native American term for “Turtle River” and is shared by Palm Beach County’s winding Loxahatchee River. Loxahatchee supports a population of just over 3,000 people on approximately 12.5 sq. miles, in addition to a diverse selection of attractions and amenities. With lot sizes averaging from 2 to 20-plus acres, it’s no surprise that like its sister village, Wellington, a large number of equestrian facilities, equestrian-focused communities, private equestrian estates and equestrian-related vendors can be found in Loxahatchee.

South Florida’s only safari attraction can be found in Loxahatchee at the Lion Country Safari and the community’s legendary natural beauty is on display at the numerous parks, refuges and preserves that surround the area. Loxahatchee Preserve, Loxahatchee Groves Park and the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge are all moments away and provide the some of the best opportunities in the world to experience south Florida’s unique and vibrant ecosystem and its flora and fauna.
