The area that was to be known as Gulf Stream was a largely undeveloped slice of paradise until the town was incorporated in 1925 along with the famous world-class Gulf Stream Golf Club in the previous year. The town and club earned its moniker from the Gulf Stream current which flows along the Florida coast and Palm Beach County.
