Local Palm Beach Gardens Historical Facts

Incorporated in 1959 when industry titan John D. MacArthur purchased and made plans to develop 4,000 acres of land for the purpose of providing housing in an idyllic and “garden city” environment, Palm Beach Gardens experienced its first population and development in the early 1960’s. In 1970, MacArthur celebrated the city’s then, population of 7,000 by purchasing and moving an 80-year-old Banyan tree from nearby Lake Park. An additional tree was purchased and moved the following year and still remain at the center of MacArthur Boulevard near Northlake Boulevard and featured on the city shield to this day.

While still short of MacArthur’s initial hopes for a community of 55,000 residents, today, Palm Beach Gardens enjoys a population of a little over 50,000 people and the city enjoys a reputation as a favorite spot to call home for both families and retirees alike.
