Highland Beach’s HIGHLAND BEACH HISTORY AND INFLUENCES

Previously inhabited by the Calusa native American tribe, the area that would be known as Highland Beach was largely uninhabited by Europeans until 1896 when Henry Fagler completed the famous East Coast Railway which allowed for an influx of settlers and development in the area. Present day Highland Beach was incorporated in 1949 by its original and first 21 free-voters in order to safeguard freshwater sources and a desire to protect the developmental interests of the town. Since then, Highland Beach has benefitted from an explosion of tasteful high-end development and property values have increased exponentially.
